Hi friends! We’re a bit snowed in over here, which is awesome because it means Fabio and I have off from work today. 🙂 Hello, four day weekend!

It’s actually pretty silly when you think about it – I mean I’ve been working from home for more than a month with no problems, but as soon as the Federal Government declares itself closed, my office closes as well. Oh well – no complaints here! Snow days are the best!

Our three day weekend was pretty wonderful, especially since we had a lot of fun Valentine’s Day festivities built in. Here are some of the highlights!

  • Friday’s lunch with Anne

Anne and I met up for a delicious sushi lunch on Friday, and we had a great time catching up over gigantic bites of salmon strawberry sushi, eel rolls, spicy tuna, and more.

The salmon lover’s roll which came with strawberries and avocado was one of my new favorites. Yum!

Although the food was delicious as usual, it was also really great to chat with Anne! I can’t wait until we’re able to work out together again – I especially miss our runs! Those days will be here soon enough, I suppose.

  • Happy hour with Fabio’s new coworkers

As I mentioned last week, Fabio is starting a new job! He actually worked with some of these guys (literally all guys – no girls in sight) on his last contract, but there are a lot of new faces too. It was great to meet them all, and since many of the guys are around the same age as us I’m sure we’ll all become great friends.

Fabio arrived at the happy hour with a bouquet of red roses for me (cue the “awwwww”) and then a few minutes later his coworker Kyle showed up with the exact same bouquet for his fiancé (apparently they were selling them nearby, haha).

Ah well, at least they remembered!

While perusing the happy hour menu, I saw that they had a beer called “the peg-leg” so naturally Fabio and I had to try it out. It was much darker than any beer I normally would have ordered, but I couldn’t pass up a beer called the peg-leg!!

It was tasty, but definitely not my normal preference.

Hopefully now that I’m walking, that will be the last mention of the peg-leg for a while!!

  •  Friday evening drinks

After happy hour, we kept the fun going with a couple of cocktails at our apartment. Fabio’s coworker Torin came over, and my friend Bianca was actually already at our apartment since she had some meetings in Arlington earlier in the day and I told her she could work from our apartment. Drinks for all!

After drinks we met up with some friends at Spider Kelly’s, and then took the party over to Mister Days. I was nervous about being out at the bar in my boot/on one crutch, but it was still relatively early in the evening so it wasn’t a problem. It was so fun getting out of the house!

  • Valentine’s Day breakfast

For breakfast on Valentine’s Day, I made us a batch of festive buttermilk pancakes. To make these, I swirled some pink food coloring into the pancake batter, and then made the pancakes as usual.

They turned out great!

  • Fabio’s Valentine’s Day gift

Fabio and I aren’t huge on Valentine’s Day gifts, and usually we will just have a nice dinner at home and then maybe exchange something small. This year I surprised him by making him a cute dry-erase “I love you because” frame! It was pretty cheap and easy to make, and I thought it would be a good way for us to remind the other person why we love them.

It was actually pretty difficult to keep the surprise since I can’t drive myself around and needed to order most of the supplies online, but I think I did a pretty good job. I did have to cave on Valentine’s Day and ask Fabio to take me to the craft store to pick out some paper, but I didn’t tell him what it was for. I’m sneaky like that. 🙂

Once we arrived home with the paper and a package of dry-erase markers, I pulled the picture frame out of its hiding place in the closet and got to work. Don’t you think it came out cute? It’s currently hanging underneath a print of the Spanish steps by our front door. That way we will see it everyday!

Fabio was the first one to write on the frame and completed the sentence with “I love you because you bought this.”

We have since gone back and forth (using a different pack of markers that show up a bit better) writing things like “I love you because you make juice in the morning” and “I love you because you share the last pepperoni.” Ha! So far I’m loving it!

  • Valentine’s Day dinner

Fabio’s “gift” to me (in addition to the roses) was making me a nice dinner! He wound up making leek and mushroom chicken with creamed kale on the side.

While he cooked, I sipped red wine and read my book. It was so nice!

Dinner came together in no time, and everything tasted delicious!

I think Fabio slightly underestimated how much the kale would cook down, so we wound up with a smaller side of kale than initially planned. 😉 Oh well – it still tasted great!

For dessert I made “not ‘yo mama’s banana pudding” and it was SO good! I definitely recommend this dish next time you’re looking for a unique dessert.

Such a fun Valentine’s Day!

  • Lunch with Fabio’s sister & fiancé

Another highlight from my weekend was a lovely lunch in Georgetown with Fabio’s sister, Diane, and her fiancé, Alex. We wound up meeting at Il Canale, a delicious little pizza spot.

Our meal began with a basket of bread and garlicky olive oil, and then we decided to share two pizzas and an order of ghnocci.

We wound up getting the Georgetown (buffalo mozzarella, spinach, sausage, and fresh basil) and La Regina (tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, ricotta cheese,
prosciutto, and fresh basil). Everything was great!

We finished up our meal with a pair of strawberry canolis. Yum!

It was so fun catching up with Diane and Alex, and I can’t wait for all of Diane’s upcoming wedding activities. We have a lot of fun events coming up this Spring!

  • Cozy, snowy fun

The rest of our weekend was quite relaxing, and since it was so cold and snowy out we spent a lot of time wrapped up on the couch watching TV and movies.

With mugs of hot chocolate, of course!

Even though I’m walking without crutches now (YAYY!!!) it’s pretty much impossible for me to go outside in the snow in my boot, so Fabio’s still walking Jack. He took these adorable pictures of Jack in the snow yesterday, and I just about died from the cuteness.

Tasting the snowflakes!

I just love that little guy.

Alright friends, we made it through my super long weekend recap! I hope you’re having a great week so far!

Question of the day: How you do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

  1. Holy food pictures!! haha I’m not sure about strawberries on sushi but sure is pretty! Glad you had a good wknd!

  2. it’s snowing here in nashville, too! looks like you had an awesome valentine’s day weekend. and now i’ve decided that hot chocolates are in order!!

  3. Love your V-Day gift idea — a gift that keeps on giving!

Instead of going the traditional, way-too-expensive-dinner-in-a-restaurant route, we invited a group of friends over to our house and did some deep dish pizza — super fun way to celebrate love!

  4. All the food looks delicious! I recently started a “happiness board” in our kitchen since we have a white board that we rarely use. One or both of us will write something that makes us happy and change it every few days. It’s been a fun experiment and I was surprised that my husband actually participated haha.

  5. Holy crap so much good food! That strawberry sushi looks beautiful — I don’t like sushi but it really does look gorgeous! I’m not a dark beer gal either — lighter is the way to go! Fabio has the handwriting of a third grader and I love it haha great gift! The homemade stuff is the best these days. With Pinterest the options are limitless!

  6. I’ve never seen strawberry on sushi!! I haven’t learned to like dark beer just yet but I’ll always try it once 🙂 Sounds like a great Valentines weekend!! Pictures of dogs in the snow – nothing better!

  7. Ahh sounds lovely! What a great present as well with the board! Very cute.
We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day…we’re a bit boring like that. It’s my dad’s birthday so that usually takes priority. We’re not that romantic but we did enjoy a nice meal and movie night (any excuse!)

  8. Looks like such a great weekend and Valentine’s Day! That strawberry sushi looks AMAZING! I am seriously missing sushi right now, and cannot WAIT to have it in my life again. I’m pretty sure that’s going to be my first post-baby meal – sushi and red wine!

  9. So fun sushi-ing with you on Friday, too! 🙂 Can’t wait until you’re all healed up and we can get back to our fun workout adventures!
