Oooh man you guys.  This week has not started off on the right foot for me.

Hmmm where to begin.

At around 2:00 pm on Monday, my tummy started feeling reallllly funny. At first I thought maybe I was just digesting something weird and that the pain would go away. Since I had a really important meeting at 3:00, I tried to power through the pain. I got some work done, but as my 3:00 meeting loomed closer and closer, my stomach pains only got worse.

By this time I knew something was seriously not ok. I told a few of my coworkers that I felt sick and said I would probably go home after my meeting. I kept telling myself that I just had to make it though the meeting, then I could go home.

Suddenly 3:00 struck and I went into the meeting pretending everything was fine. I got a little shaky at times, identified a few trash cans in case I needed to throw up at a moment’s notice, and said what I had to say in front of my three very important bosses who where in the meeting with me. Thank God.

As soon as I got back to my desk I called my manager and told her I was NOT feeling well and that I needed to go home ASAP. I didn’t even mess with the metro; I just hailed a cab and zoomed right home. [I should note that my manager is amazing and once she heard how I was feeling she offered to drive me home. I didn't want to inconvenience her, but what a gem.]

At some point on my ride home, the cab driver looked back at me and asked if I was going to be ok. I guess I looked a bit sick as well. Highlight of the week right there, when the cab driver is worried you’re going to vomit in his car. Awesome.

A few short minutes later we pulled up in front my apartment, I paid the fare and ran out, and then sprinted up the stairs. I even thought about what would happen if I didn’t make it inside my apartment and threw up on the carpeted hallway. Luckily that didn’t happen.

Somehow I made it all the way to the bathroom and gracefully threw up in the toilet before I was even able to remove my coat or pet Jack. [Side note: Jack was pretty annoyed at this actually. Usually the first thing I do upon my arrival is spend a good 5-7 minutes cooing over him, and he was annoyed that I favored the toilet over his cute face].

I spent the rest of the afternoon cowering under the covers with a fever and occasionally running to the bathroom to throw up more. What happened to me?!

Luckily yesterday was a much better day and thankfully there was no more vomit (Woohoo. Vomit-free days are the best kind). Instead I spent almost the whole day at home sleeping, which seemed to cure me completely.

I did manage to get down a little food (which was a huge improvement from the night before, when I could only eat 2 bites of soup and sip on Gatorade) but my eats weren’t anything exciting. I’ll show you anyway, obviously, since today is What I Ate Wednesday.

Breakfast

For breakfast I had a whole wheat English muffin topped with a little Brummel & Brown buttery spread. I thought some carbs would be good for my tummy. I also had an apple chopped up with almond butter. When I felt sick as a little kid, my grandma would make me eat an apple with a spoon (did anyone else have to do this?). It seems weird now, but apples always remind me of being sick and (maybe it’s just in my head) but they seem to make me feel better.

Lunch

For lunch I had some chicken noodle soup and bread from Corner Bakery (which Fabio was sweet enough to bring home for me on Monday). I also had a few saltine crackers and a giant glass of blue Gatorade (unpictured). This lunch helped perk me up, but then I immediately took a three-hour nap. What can you do.

By the time I woke up at around 6:00 pm, I was feeling much, much better. I even had some energy to cook a normal dinner for Fabio and me.

Dinner

I made some homemade calzones using whole wheat Pillsbury pizza crust, grilled chicken, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese (These were very easy! To make you just roll out the dough, cut into fourths, distribute toppings evenly among the four squares of dough, wrap them up like calzones, pinch the sides together, and bake in the oven for about 15 minutes at 400 degrees). We also had green beans and carrots on the side. I thankfully had my appetite back at this point, so I ate every bite. Yum.

Today I’m back at work and feeling almost 100% better, so whatever that awful bug was at least it was quick. I am happy to report my stomach is completely back to normal and my fever is gone.

Hooray!

Question of the day: Did you have any weird remedies for being sick as a kid?

Hey guys!! I hope you are all having a wonderful Wednesday (I can never help myself with the alliteration lol).

Unfortunately I have a bit of a cold and am feeling pretty under the weather right now. You know, like the kind of cold where your nose all of a sudden decides to start running like crazy and there is NOTHING you can do about except sniff unsuccessfully and then wipe your nose casually on the back of your hand because you are on the metro/in a meeting/in the elevator and you don’t have a tissue and then you feel gross and wash your hands eight times with hot water and soap and try not infect everyone around you? Yeah. It’s like that. So much fun.

I’ve actually been feeling sick for more than a week now and unfortunately it seems to be getting worse instead of better. Ugh. I’ve been drinking plenty of tea and taking tons of vitamins and meds, so hopefully I can kick this thing soon.

Anyway, let’s move on to what I have been eating this week (is there any way to gracefully transition from talking about snot to food? I don’t think so) with another What I Ate Wednesday!! Woot!!

Thanks as always go to Jenn for hosting the fun blogger linkup and for allowing us to all take a minute to celebrate one thing we all love- food. Lol. (BTW if you are a foodie checkout this hilarious article).

Ok so without further ado, here’s what I ate yesterday!

Breakfast

For breakfast I had one cup of Total Raisin Bran cereal (measured out with a measuring cup because 1. I’m a nerd 2. I eat with my eyeballs and 3. I’m a nerd) with some skim milk. I know it’s not the most creative breakfast ever, but I’m on a Raisin Bran kick right now and loving it. So easy and delicious!

Lunch

For lunch I had some delicious homemade chicken turkey noodle soup. I made it with leftover turkey from Thanksgiving, whole wheat noodles, a mix of chicken broth and water, spices, and a ton of veggies (seriously you should see the amount of carrots in that bowl. Definitely my favorite part of soup!!). I also had a few saltine crackers thrown in. Yummmm. Side note: I have been making a ton of homemade soups lately and I can’t get over how easy they are to make! I will have to share my chicken noodle soup recipe with you all soon because it is so simple and quick! This one is definitely helping me feel better :)

Snack

When I got home from work I was feeling a little hungry so I munched on a few “smokey nuts” that my aunt made for Thanksgiving. They are the most amazing little snacks and at first they taste sweet but then they have a spicy punch. Woah! After this little handful I needed some water. These little sweet & spicy treats are delicious!! I will have to get the recipe so I can share it with you guys.

Dinner

For dinner I made a chicken “burrito” of sorts made with red beans (leftover from Fabio’s Thanksgiving which was catered from New Orleans. Long story), quinoa, chicken, and avocado. It was pretty simple but it sure was delicious!! I had a little Melinda’s hot sauce along with my “burrito” and I enjoyed every last bite. So good! I also had some roasted broccoli on the side.

So there you have it! My eats from yesterday. Nothing too crazy or too exciting, but pretty good all the same. I have to admit with this cold I actually don’t have much of an appetite (e.g., on Sunday I was planning to skip dinner altogether even though we had Thanksgiving leftovers and on Thanksgiving I didn’t go back for seconds of anything and didn’t even eat everything on my plate. Who is this mystery girl with no appetite and can she stay forever???) haha. Although it’s not much fun being sick, at least it’s helping me maintain my weight around the holidays.

At least, for now ;) haha.

Question of the Day: What’s your favorite Thanksgiving food to enjoy as leftovers?

I love making a sandwich the day after Thanksgiving with mayo, turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce on it. Yummm. It’s a special treat I like to share with my dad after a busy day of spending time with my family. So nice :)

Don’t forget my giveaway for a free slow cooker ends on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. Enter while there’s still time!

Good evening everyone! I hope you had a great Tuesday! For my part I was all confused about what day of the week it was. I can’t tell you how many times I thought it was either Wednesday or Thursday. I kept thinking: What, it’s only Tuesday?? Oh yeah. Duh.

In addition to my scatter-brain, I had a rough day because what started off as a small tickle in my throat last week, has turned into a full-blown hacking cough. It’s not only gross, it’s annoying and painful. I think I probably coughed more than 100 times today. I know I exaggerate sometimes, but today I’m telling the truth! It was at least 100 times. Ugh. Plus when I woke up this morning I had a really hard time breathing through all the phlegm. I blame Fabio for this cough since he had something similar last week. Humph. It is not pleasant.

One nice thing did happen to me today though; my pots and pans from the Picky Palate grand prize giveaway that I won finally arrived! Woohoo!

Workout

Because of this annoying cough I took it easy today on my workout and just ran a mile with Jack in the morning. I also completed a short circuit of pushups, tricep dips, squats, and side leg lifts, but I wanted to avoid too much cardio because of my cough. UGH. Being sick is the worst. At least I got to work on some muscles that are usually ignored in my regular routine..cough triceps cough. Get it? Cough? Sorry. Sick sense of humor I have (ha!).

Recipe

Instead of my normal cereal and milk breakfast combo, I decided to whip up a fresh fruity spinach smoothie. I figured this way I could blast my body with some extra antioxidants to help fight off the cough. My smoothie actually tasted extremely delicious and I felt like I was having sorbet for breakfast! I’m definitely going to have to make more of these even when I’m not sick Smile Here’s how it came together.

First, I combined frozen mango and mixed berries in my blender.

I pulsed these frozen fruits together until they were in smaller, uniform pieces. Then I got the rest of my ingredients together:

Into the blender with the frozen fruits went a banana, skim milk, fat free plain yogurt (which I thought was Greek yogurt when I bought it. I was just so excited by how much cheaper it was! I should have known…), honey, and spinach. I’ve read before that you can’t taste spinach in fruit smoothies but I was still skeptical. I promise that when it all came together I couldn’t taste it a bit! It just tasted like fruity goodness! Anyway, I pulsed all of these ingredients together in the blender until it became a smooth liquid.

The smoothies came out pretty thick so I enjoyed it with a spoon! It was delicious, but it took a while to eat (brain freeze is a killer!) so next time I will thin it out with some more milk. It was so good though!

So that’s it for my smoothie recipe! Although I still felt under the weather all day, I know those vitamins must have helped a little! So, what do you make for yourself when you’re feeling sick? Last time I was sick I made some lightened-up creamy chicken and rice soup. Now that is a great recipe for when you’re feeling crappy!
