A week ago today my plane was sitting on the runway waiting to take off. I had snacks in my lap, a good book on my kindle, and two of my best friends beside me. Three more of my best friends were sitting on a similar plane in New York, and we were all so excited to arrive in the Dominican Republic. Sigh…time flies so quickly.

To help elongate my vacation just a little more (ok so maybe I’m in denial that it’s over) I’m going to share the first part of my recap with you guys today. Buckle your seat belts folks, it’s going to be a long ride!

My alarm went off at4:30 on Thursday morning, but I was so excited for my trip that I had already been awake for nearly 10 minutes. At this point I hopped in the shower, ate a quick English muffin for breakfast, and packed up a few last minute items.

Soon I got a call that my friend Megan was outside in her car, and that my other friend Britt was almost there in her cab. It was time to leave! After saying a hasty goodbye to Jack and a sleepy goodbye to Fabio (he did NOT want to wake up) I hopped in the car and we were on our way!

Traffic was light and we made it to the airport in no time. We arrived a little before 7:00 am and, since our flight didn’t leave until 9:00, we thought we had plenty of time to get through the check in and security.

We were so wrong. For some reason all the lines were out of control, probably due to sequestration flight regulation changes and increased security due to the Boston Marathon.

We wound up making our flight just in time and didn’t even have time to sit at the gate before hopping on board. Phew! We made it. (A bunch of people came on way after we had already boarded the plane and made us a little delayed. It was crazy!)

The flight was relatively uneventful and after a few hours we arrived in the balmy Dominican Republic.

The Punta Cana airport doesn’t have any gates and instead they wheel the stairs up to the plane and you get to walk down outside. Love that! The sun was shining, the weather was warm, and we knew it was going to be a great vacation 🙂

After making it through security, we received a text that our friends’ plane in New York was delayed, so we made our way to the hotel without them (which was too bad, since we were supposed to arrive within 10 minutes of each other. Oh well).

We took a shuttle to the hotel and were there in no time! We stayed at the Melia Caribe which was fabulous; I could not recommend it enough! The staff was great and the property was beautiful and quite expansive.

There was also a ton of wildlife on the property, including peacocks and flamingos.

In the past, my friends and I have had the conversation about which animal each of us would be based on our personalities and looks (we are weird). We always said that my friend Britt would be a flamingo! (I am a koala, in case you are curious). When we saw a bunch of flamingos, we made Britt go stand with them, haha!

Anyyyway, once we had checked into the hotel, we took a golf cart to our room to drop our stuff off and change into swimsuits.

Britt and I rode in the back!

At this point it was around 3:30 pm which meant we still had some time in the sun and we did not want to waste it! We quickly headed to the pool which was absolutely gorgeous.

We spent some time lounging by the pool and enjoying the sunshine before the rest of our friends arrived. Soon we heard some familiar voices from across the pool and realized that Catrina, Megan, and Vic had finally made it to the hotel! Hooray!! We enjoyed some celebratory drinks and hung out by the pool for a little while longer before heading back to the room to change for dinner.

We took this opportunity to unpack a little, which was quite funny since there were only three of us in each room and we all had so much stuff. We unpacked the shoes first.

This doesn’t even count the flip flops that each of us was wearing while we were unpacking!! Obviously I was the only one to bring sneakers haha.

Then we unpacked the jewelry…

OMG you guys. This was like heaven for us. There was so much fun jewelry to choose from! Getting dressed for dinner each night was so much fun because we got to “shop” for jewelry on the table haha. I definitely recommend doing this next time you travel with a bunch of girls!

Then we got dressed and headed to dinner! We went to the International restaurant, which I described yesterday in my Punta Cana What I Ate Wednesday post. It was great and a lot of fun!

After dinner we headed to one of the bars and enjoyed a few more drinks. It was such a fun night!

After the bar we headed over to the “disco” which was basically a club on the resort. They played a lot of good music and we had a lot of fun dancing. The best part was everything was free!

It was definitely a great start to our vacation!

I’ll be back with more of a recap tomorrow 🙂 Have a great day!

Question of the day: Do you like to fly? Have you had any bad delays lately?

  1. Hey girl! I’ve been reading your blog for a while not, but haven’t commented before. I love reading your posts 🙂 Punta Cana looks gorgeous!! I’m looking forward to hearing more about it! When my husband and I were flying to Maui for our honeymoon we had a 2 and a half hour layover in Dallas. Of course, we planned on spending our time hanging out at the airport, but our first flight was delayed 2 hours because of snow. We ended up have to sprint through the Dallas airport to our next gate and just barely made it on time…I’m sure we looked ridiculous lol

  2. Oh man, I can’t believe you were up at 4:30 for a 9 am flight and still almost missed your flight- ugh the airport must have been crazy! Glad you got there safely though and what better way to start your vacay off then time by the pool with your girls enjoying some drinks! And OMG I love how you guys unpacked your clothes and jewelry- that is so fun! When I was in LA for my last girls reunion trip, my friend who has her own jewelry company brought tons and would accessorize us each day! It was so fun!

  3. girl, why do you have to always dress so cute?! lol

  4. LOVE your dress!! Super cute :).

  5. Going away with girls is so good. Though I always find there’s such a hold up in the morning to get ready or the evening as everyone is doing their hair etc. hehe. Love that you all shared your jewellery, such a great selection there.
Sucks about the plane delay. I hate travelling. Such a nightmare with timings and rushing about. You can be so organised but it’ll still feel rushed.I also hate just being sat on a plane. I like the freedom to walk about and I hate not being able to do that as often as I want on planes.

  6. Oh no!! I’m glad you guys made it there alright! The resort looks BEAUTIFUL! I cant get over how amazing the DR is. And that jewelry idea? Genius!!

  7. You look gorgeous! I only seem to have flight trouble if I fly through Chicago…Otherwise I guess I have been fairly lucky. Looks like a fun destination for a girls trip!
