Hi friends! This past weekend Fabio and I had a nice relaxing weekend at home. This was the first weekend we’ve had without major plans in ages! It felt good to have a few days to relax, especially since I wasn’t feeling so hot last week and even had a bit of a sore throat on Friday. This weekend was just what I needed! I took a bunch of pictures, so let’s jump right in!
After work on Friday, Fabio and I met up with my dad’s side of the family at the Narrows to celebrate my grandparents’ 61st wedding anniversary.
My aunt Teri and cousins Nick and Sean were in town from Arizona, so it was great to see everyone!
After starting my meal with some delicious warm bread and a chilled glass of white wine, I enjoyed a red and yellow watermelon salad with arugula and feta cheese. So good! Who knew watermelon could be yellow?
Up next was one of the daily specials: rockfish topped with sweet corn and a red bell pepper sauce served with asparagus and smashed red potatoes. Yum!
My sister and I shared a hot fudge sundae for dessert. Isn’t that what sisters are supposed to do?
Afterwords she was super excited and giddy and it was hilarious to watch. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a sugar high like that before! Sugar is seriously like drugs for kids. Crazy.
Me & my handsome date. 🙂
Our Saturday morning began with a nice long walk!
How cute are these row homes, BTW? I’ll never get tired of the fun colors!
Fabio, Jack, and I strolled over to a larger dog park near us that we’ve been meaning to check out.
We invited our friends Jadd and Jojo to meet up with us even though they don’t have a dog because we know how much they love Jack. 🙂 They came and hung out with us for a while before we all parted ways. I think they’re going to adopt a dog later this fall, and I can’t wait to see what kind they get! We are all totally those weird people who are obsessed with dogs, and I am a-ok with that! 😉
Once we got home we were pretty hungry so I whipped up some buttermilk pancakes! I also tried photographing them with my new camera and photography skills, and while I think they look ok I know I need to keep practicing!
By the way, my favorite pancake recipe is this one from my Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. My mom bought me that cookbook years ago and I still use it all the time! It’s so good for basic recipes.
We had some champagne leftover from our housewarming party, so we had mimosas with our pancakes. Because, #Saturday.
I think I’ve mentioned this on the blog before, but I like to make smaller pancakes so I can eat a bigger stack. Does anyone else do this?
After breakfast Fabio headed off to the driving range with some friends, and I parked my butt by the pool! It was a beautiful day and I had a good book to read (I’m reading Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty) so I was quite the happy camper.
Finally – some relaxation!
Later in the day I played around with my camera and took some pictures of – what else – Jack! I’m not sure he was too happy about it but it was good practice for me. 🙂 Haha!
For dinner Fabio and I walked over to DCity Smokehouse, a popular BBQ place we had heard tons about but hadn’t had a chance to visit yet. When we got there the line was out the door, but luckily it moved pretty quickly. Next time we’ll order online ahead of time, since that seemed to be a better move.
Fabio and I both wound up getting the Brisket Champ sandwich which was so good!! In fact it went unpictured because I pretty much inhaled mine. While we ate our dinner we watched Birdman, which is a strange, strange movie.
Sunday morning began with another long walk! Fabio and I took Jack over to Union Market to grab some breakfast and check out the farmer’s market.
We wound up eating outside at Bidwell, a “responsibly sourced” restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating at Union Market.
We weren’t initially planning to have a sit-down breakfast, but the tables looked so inviting and Jack was allowed to sit with us there, so we went for it. Jack wound up having a nice time people watching while we ate!
For my breakfast I ordered a spinach, mushroom, and goat cheese omelet with a side salad and home fries. Everything was fantastic and very fresh! I could tell the salad dressing was homemade, which I loved.
Once we got home I relaxed by the pool again for a bit while Fabio played golf (he’s obsessed) and then I headed down to our gym for a workout!
I wound up running two miles on the treadmill before completing this upper body strength circuit:
It was a good one!
By the time I was finished working out and had cleaned myself up, Fabio still wasn’t home so I decided to use up some bananas that were going bad by making a batch of mini banana oatmeal chocolate chip muffins!
I played around with a new recipe and they turned out great! I’ll be sharing it with you all soon. 🙂
Fabio finally got home at around 4:30 and then we hit up the grocery store for our weekly haul. Upon arriving home I made Fabio’s favorite meal ever – baked ziti! It made a ton of food so we will be eating leftovers for days. Sigh. At least it was tasty!
We wrapped up our evening with an episode of Vice and the delicious baked ziti.
Overall it was a fantastic weekend at home!
Question of the day: Waffles or pancakes? Sweet breakfast or savory?
