Hi friends! Happy Friday! I know I say this every week, but I am so, so happy it’s Friday. For some reason I’ve been feeling a bit out of sorts all week – just really tired with intermittent headaches. Things have been pretty busy at work and my social schedule has been a bit crazy for the past few months, so I’m really looking forward to a weekend without too many plans set in stone. Hopefully this means I’ll be able to catch up on some sleep! My body definitely needs it!
Sadly it’s not quite time to call it quits yet, so let’s kick off this Friday with some of my favorite things from the week. 🙂 Feel free to share your favorites in the comments below!
You guys! How awesome is this? I had lunch with my dad last week and mentioned that I wanted to get better at using my DSLR camera. I’ve had one for quite some time now but only shoot in automatic mode and have a really hard time with it because the batteries are CONSTANTLY dying (it used to be my grandpa’s and I think it’s a bit old. It seriously drains the batteries after about 5 pictures!).
After talking with him, he went online and found a used Canon Rebel SL1 for me, which is one of the best cameras on the market! He also got me a sweet lens that can shoot up close and really far away.
I’ve already played around with a lot, and just ordered the Canon SL1 for Dummies book so I can get familiar with it before our upcoming trip to Europe. I really want to get better at shooting in the creative modes versus automatic, so I read a bunch of articles this week to help me better understand aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. In case you’re interested as well, here are some of the best articles I read:
I’m still pretty awful at shooting in the creative modes, but with practice (and enough lighting – ugh) I think I can get there! I’d love any tips from you photography pros out there!
Thanks again, Daddy!! 🙂
This week I tried to step up my meal planning game since I’ve been slacking for most of the summer. It’s been really hard to grocery shop and meal plan on Sundays because our schedule has been so busy! Last week I meal planned and shopped on Friday night, which helped a ton. We tried two new meals this week, both of which were a hit.
On Monday we had kale Caesar pasta salad, which was really easy to make and very tasty. I added some chicken to it for added protein, and I will definitely be making this one again! We both loved the roasted tomatoes!
Then on Wednesday we had cheeseburger casserole which was also very easy and delicious! I loved that this casserole made a ton so we’ve both had leftovers for lunch for the rest of the week. I also really love the addition of the pickles on top. Yum! It tastes just like a reconstructed burger, and sort of reminds me of the hamburger helper I used to have as a kid, only without all the weird preservatives. Definitely try this one!
Any suggestions for what I should make next week? Fabio’s requesting Italian food so I’m thinking about a lightened up lasagna or baked ziti. I’d love to hear your ideas!
One night before bed, I leaned over to turn out the light and I spotted one of Jack’s toys in my purse (this was the lion whose mane got chewed off 😉 haha).
I thought this was so funny because I obviously did not put the lion there myself, and I was wondering what exactly was going through Jack’s mind when he decided his toy just needed to sit in my purse. Maybe he thought it was his toy basket which is just a few feet away? Either way, hilarious.
(Quick side story: One time we were visiting Fabio’s dad in New York and Jack found a squeaky ball that belonged to Fabio’s dad’s dog, Marley. Jack played with the ball all weekend, and wouldn’t put it down! Then when we got back home Fabio unzipped his suitcase and found the squeaky ball inside! Apparently Jack had dropped it into Fabio’s suitcase. What a sneak!)
As you know, I haven’t been running as much lately since I’m on ClassPass and try to make the most of my monthly fee. However the other night when Fabio got home from work and declared he wanted to go for a run, I couldn’t say no! I can’t remember the last time we ran together so this was an especially nice surprise. We set out for a rather late run and covered a little over four miles around the McMillian Reservoir near Howard University.
It was a cloudy and overcast evening, and we felt a few raindrops during our run but luckily the skies never opened up. Phew!
We had a great run and our splits weren’t too horrible either (9:47, 9:19, 8:33, 9:30 and 9:30 again for the last .01 mile). Definitely slower than some of my fastest times, but considering I haven’t been running much and I’m not training for anything I was fine with it.
After our run we weren’t quite ready to head inside yet, so we grabbed some burgers leftover from our housewarming party and spent some time out by the grill (with Jack, of course). Having access to a grill is such a luxury!
Fabio’s burgers are always on point too. So delicious!
As promised, here’s a picture of our finalized travel wall collage! I know I totally should have taken this picture during the day time when the lighting is better (and when there’s no glare from the TV – ugh) but I kept forgetting until last night, and then this was the best lighting I could get. Sorry!
Anyway you should be able to get the gist of it though! I really like how the arrangement came out and I like that it’s not too perfectly symmetrical. Plus we’ll be able to add to it as we continue traveling!
Looking at all the pictures from our travel adventures makes me so happy. We’ve been to a lot of cool places!
Favorite Pop of Color
A bunch of people brought us flowers for our housewarming party, and I have been absolutely loving the fresh pop of color they add to our apartment.
I’d really like to get into the habit of having fresh flowers around more often. They’re so pretty!
Alright folks, that’s all I have for you today. Have a wonderful weekend!
Question of the day: Name one thing that made you smile this week.
