Hello, hello! Happy Friday! Everyone ready for the weekend?
I had a pretty nice week over here, and there were a lot of things making me smile, so let’s take a look with another Favorite Things Friday post, shall we?
Favorite Date Day
On Tuesday, Fabio and I both had off work for Veteran’s Day. Since we live just about a mile from Arlington National Cemetery and it was a beautiful day, we took a stroll over there to pay our respects to the men and women who died for our country.
We had hoped to make it in time for the Vice President’s speech, however we got there a little after it started (I didn’t realize the Tomb of the Unknowns was another 20 minute walk from the entrance!) and the secret service wasn’t letting people get close once he started talking. Boo.
Luckily we had something else to do in the cemetery – look for my great, great grandparents who are buried there! We wound up walking another 20 minutes or so to the visitor’s center to look up where they were buried, but by then we had walked about three miles and it turns out they were buried in a different section of the cemetery. Who knew this place was so big??
Fabio and I printed out the information for my great, great grandparents and made a vow to come back soon – possibly for the annual wreath-laying ceremony where volunteers lay holiday wreaths on each grave. Wow. I think that would be an awesome event to help out with.
By the time we made it home, we had walked about five miles and were pooped. It was such a nice way to spend Veteran’s Day though!
Fun fact: Right before we went to bed on Tuesday, we realized it was our six year anniversary. We had both forgotten! We’re the worst when it comes to our dating anniversary. At least we spent it doing something fun together!
Favorite Dinner Date
Last night, I met up with my friend Anne for a yoga and dinner date! Our yoga class was at Edge Yoga, and I loved it! I’ll talk more about the class next week, but for now I’ll just say that I am seriously considering buying a package of classes and/or asking for some for Christmas. It was great!
For dinner we hit up Sweet Leaf, a salad place that is almost exactly the same as SweetGreen. We both made our own salads which wound up being gigantic. Mine was made with mixed greens and spinach and was topped with chicken, roasted brussels sprouts, sweet potato, carrots, cucumber, red onion, quinoa, butternut squash, broccoli and raspberry vinaigrette. It was delicious, but I was only able to finish about half before calling it quits.
I’m looking forward to having the rest for lunch today. 🙂 Such a fun way to spend a dreary and cold Thursday night!
Have you guys ever seen the “we made too much” link on Lululemon’s website? Maybe this is old news, but I just discovered this sale section of Lulu’s website a couple weeks ago, and wound up making two great purchases. I got the tank top and running shorts you see below for about $25 each (about 50% off the original price). Woohoo! Jack was psyched too. 😉
Of course these items aren’t exactly appropriate for today’s weather, but I can still wear them when working out indoors and I know next summer I will wear them a ton! I will definitely be keeping my eye on that section of the website from now on.
Although I’ve read all about the benefits of juicing, I don’t have a juicer myself, and can’t get down with spending tons of money on produce that yields 1/4 cup of juice when I could be using it for three meals instead. That’s why I was so excited when the folks from Alive Juices, a DC-based company that makes and delivers fresh pressed
juices to residents in the DC and Baltimore area, reached out to me asking if I wanted to try their juices. Heck yes I do!
They delivered a bag right to my door which came with four juices, a packet of herbs, and a small package of trail mix. Here are the juices I got:
- Positive Karma (promotes cardiovascular & bone health) – Big 4*, cucumber, celery, spinach, cilantro
- Guru’s Green (promotes immunity & colon health) – Big 4*, romaine lettuce, bokchoy, collards, fennel
- Morning Sunshine (provides antioxidant protection & promotes immunity) – Big 4*, squash, cilantro, yellow bell pepper, pineapple
- Detox Mantra (controls cholesterol & promotes detoxification) – Big 4*, carrots, beet, kale, cilantro
*Big 4 – apple, ginger, garlic and lemon
Before you drink the juice, you’re supposed to add a pinch of the herbs and then give it a good shake.
Shake, shake, shake!
Then drink up! I loved all of the juices, and although they had slightly different flavors, I can’t say I had a favorite. I think this juice delivery service would be perfect for someone who, like me, wants to start incorporating more fresh juice in their routine but doesn’t want to buy a juicer plus all the produce, and then spend all that time juicing. This is much easier!
Prices for this service vary depending on how many juices you want to order, and you can find all the different options here. You can also get 20% off your first order with the promo code BeAliveDC at checkout. I definitely recommend giving this a shot if you’re at all interested!
I think I’ve mentioned before that This American Life is one of my favorite podcasts, and I’ve recently started listening to their spin-off podcast, Serial, as well. This podcast follows one story in sequential order each week, and it’s so good! I have loved listening to it on my walks to and from the metro, as well as during some of my runs lately. If you’re a fan of This American Life, definitely check it out!
Also as a side note, I’ve realized that there are a lot of people out there who don’t really “get” podcasts (e.g., where to download them, why they should listen to them, what’s the big deal, etc.). I’ve been thinking about writing a post on this since I’ve become pretty obsessed with podcasts in the last year or so, so let me know if this is something you’d be interested in hearing about!
Favorite Sale Part II
My Holiday Half Marathon is going to be here before you know it, and I recently found out it’s the same day as Santacon – a day where everyone in NYC dresses up in crazy Santa outfits and holiday gear and hops around to various bars in the city. I’m happy to report that most of my NYC friends (and even some of my non-NYC friends!) will be cheering me on for my race in their holiday finest, and then we will all be heading to the bars after. Woohoo! I am so excited and I literally cannot think of a more fun way to celebrate the end of my race!
To prepare for the occasion, Fabio and I hit up a thrift store called Unique that’s about 20 minutes away from us. In college I learned that thrift stores are the best place to find random holiday gear, and Unique did not disappoint.
They also happened to be having a 50% off sale, so I was able to get the three shirts and reindeer antlers you see above for less than $20. Awesome!!
I am currently thinking about wearing the sweatshirt during the race with some sort of long-sleeve sweat-wicking shirt underneath (possibly a red Under Armour turtle neck?) and then switching into the embroidered vest and antlers after. Fabio is going to wear the vest at the top of this picture. 😉
I’m so excited!
Alright friends, that’s all I have for you today! Have a great weekend!
Questions of the day: Do you listen to podcasts? Are you a juicer? Do you like my holiday gear?! Haha.
